CEFR - Common European Framework of Reference for Languages-is an internationally recognized benchmark of language ability. The framework uses six levels to describe language ability, from A1 to C2. 'Can Do' statements have been used to describe these levels in terms of real skills with language, such as being able to write a report, or take a telephone message.
KET is Cambridge ESOL’s exam, which recognizes the ability to deal with everyday written and spoken English at a basic level. There are two versions of KET available: KET and KET for Schools. Both follow exactly the same format and the level of questions is identical. The only difference is that the topics in KET for Schools targets the interests and experience of school pupils.
PET is an exam for people who can use everyday written and spoken English at an intermediate level. PET covers all four major language skills- reading, writing, listening and speaking. FCE is an exam for people who can use everyday written and spoken English at an upper-intermediate level. It is an ideal exam for people who want to use English for work or study purposes.
Cambridge Advanced English otherwise known, as Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) is a high-level qualification that is officially recognized by universities, employers and governments around the world.
CPE is Cambridge ESOL’s most advanced exam. It is aimed at people who use English for professional or study purposes.
The skills for life tests are designed for leaner’s age 14 and over whose first language is not English, who are living or trying to settle in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Computer based testing
Most Cambridge ESOL exams are now available to be taken as computer based-tests. This has the added bonus of having more dates each year and allows students to be able to register for the exam as little as a week before taking their exam, allowing then to take the exam when they are ready. The other benefits of computer based testing are:
- Faster access to results, with scores available to be seen online just three weeks after the test
- Many students are more comfortable using a computer than paper and pen
- Test takers can edit their answers on screen during the exam
- The use of headphones for the listening part of the exam means each candidate can adjust the volume to suit them
- Online timer and help functions help the candidate to get the best from their exam performance
